The Real Effect of Bad Words

Last Monday, June 18, a very terrible thing happened in the town of Greece in New York City.

Karen Klein is 68 years old and works as a bus monitor*.

*a person in charge of taking care of the kids on a school bus

Last Monday, Karen was bullied by 4 kids using foul language, threats and insults about her economic status, physical appearance and intelligence.

All of the kids were middle-school students; none of them is older than 16.

A cellphone video was made covering the event, titled “Making the Bus Monitor Cry,” and it was originally posted to show the humiliation of Karen Klein. 

But what the kids didn’t expect happened: The controversial video became viral all over the Net in a very short period of time. Less than 4 days after the incident, there have been more than 5 million views on the Youtube video. A fund-raiser was also made which aims to give Karen a grand vacation, and in less than 48 hours, sympathetic people from everywhere in the world have donated over half a million dollars! (The numbers just keep on climbing.)

As for the little Satans, they're having the worst time of their lives with their names, addresses, phone numbers and private information of them and their families leaked out and posted all over the Net. Most of them have received death threats. Some of them have already written notes of apology to Karen.

Are Bad Words Cool? 

Non-native speakers and learners of English don’t have much idea about the impact and use of bad words in actual situations. Most of the sources that English learners get bad words from are American movies. And these movies portray bad words as sounding “cool.”

Maybe this is what the native-speaker kids from Greece, New York also thought.

But watch the video below and judge for yourself the effect of bad words – to one person and to the rest of the world. Then you decide whether bad words can really make you sound “cool” or not.

I hope you learn to avoid this part of English.
