Are You a Little Drummer Boy?

Our special Christmas song for today is my favorite.

It’s called “Little Drummer Boy.” It was composed by Katherine Davis, Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone in 1958.

There have been many different versions of this song. And although it’s really simple, every version of this song was a big success.

Among the modern artists who have remade this song are Josh Groban, Black Eyed Peas, Justin Beever, and the cast of Glee. There’s even a rock version of it. ;-)

You can listen to it later by clicking the link at the bottom.

I’m sure you will like it! ;-)

Its words are really easy so you can learn it in just five minutes. Its lyrics are 50% pa rum pum pum. ;-D

Here's the whole song. Take a look:

Little Drummer Boy

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum

A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum

Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum

To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,

rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,

When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum

I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum

I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum

That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,

rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,

On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum

The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum

I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum

I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,

rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum

Me and my drum.

Next, just remove all of the “pa rum pum pum” part and then you have this:

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum

A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum

Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum

To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,

rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,

When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum

I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum

I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum

That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,

rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,

On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum

The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum

I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum

I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum

rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum

Me and my drum.

Finally, I’ll change the word order of the sentences a little, so they will sound more natural and easier for you to understand:

They told me to come

To see a new born King

We bring our finest gifts

To put in front of the King

Little Baby (Jesus)

I am a poor boy too

I have no gift to bring

That's fit to give a King

Shall I play for you

On my drum?

Mary (the Mother) nodded

The ox and lamb kept rhythm

I played my drum for Him

I played my best for Him

Then He smiled at me

Me and my drum.

I really like this song because it’s a very touching scene.

As you might know, Jesus was born on Christmas Day in a very poor setting – in fact, he was born in a place for horses and other animals.

But in spite of this, many kinds of guests visited him on that day, including the Three Wise Kings who brought gold and other gifts.

Because the baby Jesus was prophesied to become the King of Kings.

You may not be Christian but I’m sure you can appreciate the impressive story in the lyrics of our song.

Together with all the guests of baby Jesus is a young drummer boy.

Because the drummer boy was poor he didn’t have any gift to give Jesus. So he played his drum instead.

According to the song, the boy put all this talent, passion and feeling in the short moment that he played for Jesus:

I played my drum for Him

I played my best for Him

And as a reward, the baby smiled at him.

Now you know why I really like this song!  ;-)

For me, it means that whatever dream or talent you have, you have to give it your best. Whether it is to serve your God, your family, your girlfriend, your wife, your company, or your community.

Life is short and fleeting. But if you make it burn with all your heart and passion, it will be worth it.

This is something for you to think about during Christmas. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
